An Angel Sent from Heaven

It was in the Spring of 2000, and our son was in ICU. He had ALS and had had a successful bone marrow transplant. His body was desperately trying to recover, but the extensive radiation to his lungs caused him to develop pneumonia, which gradually took his life. I struggled to carry on with my life with the loss of our son. I needed consoling, specifically from God. Having been a cradle Catholic and attending church for many years, I suddenly had stopped going. I felt like many others that if I simply had a “personal relationship” with Jesus that I didn’t need to attend mass. I went to the Dove religious bookstore to buy any kind of literature that would help me and my wife get through this ordeal. I was met by a stranger (which I now believe was an angel sent from Heaven in the form of a human, just like you and me). She said, “Do you go to church?” I used the copout response that many others have used for an excuse of not attending church and replied “no, I have a personal relationship with Jesus”. She said, “You must eat the body of Christ and drink the blood of Christ to give you spiritual sustenance, you must attend church”. My wife and I did return to church over fifteen years ago. We not only resumed going to church but became more active in the church. My wife, who was not a Catholic, went through the conversion (RCIA), we later consummated our marriage with a priest (our marriage was originally performed by a notary public), and we joined the choir. We became part of our church through the workings of Jesus. Ironically we had to sacrifice a son to come to the realization that we really needed Jesus in our lives, not just by “personal relationship” but by being active in our church community and doing the works of God. We are confident that we will see our son again in God’s Kingdom.
